Whenever you hear of a mention of "the Holy Family," the general consensus is that it is in reference to Joseph (1), Mary (2) and Jesus (3). There are no Bible (4) verses associated with this designation and there are but a few New Testament (5) narratives which include all three together.
JOSEPH
The earthly father of Jesus is mentioned in the narratives surrounding the birth of Jesus (6) (Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 2:1-21); the Presentation of the Lord (7) (Luke 2:22-40); the Holy Family's flight into Egypt (8) (Matthew 2:13-15) and their subsequent return to Nazareth (9) (Matthew 2:19-23). Joseph's last appearance in the Bible is found in the account of Young Jesus in the Temple (10) (Luke 2:41-52). Although he is not present, Joseph is mentioned during the Ministry of Jesus (11) in two Rejection at Nazareth (12) accounts (Matthew 13:53-58; Luke 4:14-30). After that, we hear nothing more of Joseph; his death is not recorded in the Bible.
MARY
Mary is mentioned frequently in the four Gospels (13) of Matthew (14), Mark (15), Luke (16) and John (17). This includes the Birth of Jesus Foretold (Luke 1:26-38); her visiting Elizabeth (18) while the latter was carrying John the Baptist (19) in her womb (Luke 1:39-56); the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 2:1-21); the Magi Visit the Messiah (20) (Matthew 2:1-12); the Presentation of the Lord (Luke 2:22-40); the Holy Family's Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15) and their subsequent return to Nazareth (Matthew 2:19-23); Young Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52); the Wedding at Cana, when Jesus changes the water into wine (21)- His first Miracle (22) (John 2:1-12); a narrative about the family of Jesus (Mark 3:20-35); two Rejection at Nazareth accounts (Matthew 13:53-58; Mark 6:1-6) and the Crucifixion of Jesus (23) (John 19:17-27).
In addition, Acts of the Apostles 1:12-26 tells us that Mary was present with a multitude of Believers in the Upper Room after the Ascension of Jesus (24). Lastly, although not mentioned by name, the woman recorded as being "clothed with the sun" in Revelation 12:1-6 is thought by many to be a reference to Mary.
The only command of Mary recorded in the Bible can be found in John 2:5, where she directs the servants at the Wedding at Cana by saying, "Do whatever He tells you." Sound counsel 2,000 years later.
JESUS
Jesus, of course, is mentioned throughout the Old Testament (25) and New Testament, being referred to by many Names (26). He knows you. Get to know Him more intimately by diving into the Good News!
