The Return to Nazareth narrative is recorded in the Gospel (1) of Matthew (2) (Matthew 2:19-23).
 
As we previously learned from the Flight into Egypt (3), the Holy Family (4) had fled to escape the wrath of King Herod (5). The Judean ruler had learned of the birth of Jesus (6) and, to maintain his power base, was looking to have the infant Messiah (7) killed. To accomplish this, Herod ordered the Massacre of the Innocents (8).
 
An Angel of the Lord (9) interceded and came to Joseph (10) in a dream (11), telling him to escape into Egypt (12) with Mary (13) and Jesus. By doing so, they all avoided harm; they remained in Egypt until hearing that it was safe to return home.
 
This brings us up to speed with regard to the Holy Family.
 
Then, after some years passed, word finally came to Joseph in another dream through an Angel of the Lord. He told Joseph, "Get up, take the Child and His mother and go to the land of Israel (14), for those who were trying to take the Child’s life are dead.”
 
The ever obedient (15) Joseph followed the Angel's instructions, but when he heard that Herod Archelaus (16) was reigning in Judea in place of his deceased father, Herod, Joseph was afraid to go there.
 
Having been warned in a dream, Joseph withdrew his family to the district of Galilee (17), and they made a home in the town of Nazareth (18).
 
We do not hear of the Holy Family again until the account of Young Jesus in the Temple (19).
