PLACEMENT (a): The twelve Historical Books are the sixth through the seventeenth books of the Holy Bible (15) and the sixth through the seventeenth books of the Old Testament.
 
TIMELINE: The Historical Books begin with Joshua circa 1406 BC (16) and conclude with Esther circa 472 BC (17). See our Bible Timeline (18) for more info.
 
SUMMARY (b): The Historical Books record the history of the Israelite nation, beginning with the book of Joshua and the long awaited entry of the Twelve Tribes of Israel (19) into the Promised Land (20) until the time of its return from exile (21) some 1,000 years later.
 
After Joshua, this section of the Bible takes us through Israel's ups and downs under the Judges (22), its transition to kingship (23), the division of the nation (1 Kings 11:26-40; 1 Kings 14:21-31) and its life as two rival kingdoms -  Northern Kingdom of Israel (24) and Southern Kingdom of Judah (25), the moral decline and exile of both kingdoms, the period of captivity, and finally, the nation's return to Zion. The section concludes with the stand alone account of Esther, who risks her life to stop the genocide of her people.
 
The Historical Books cover almost an entire millennia of Israel's history. As we read these pages of the Bible, we relive incredible stories and meet fascinating leaders, prophets, heroes and villains. Through their real-life adventures, some of failure and some of victory, we identify personally with these characters and learn valuable lessons from their lives.
