WHAT IS RESURRECTION SUNDAY (EASTER)?

Easter Sunday (1), also known as Resurrection Sunday, is the capstone of the Christian calendar, celebrating the Resurrection (2) of our Lord, Jesus Christ (3). The belief of Christians is centered upon Sacred Scripture (4), which exhorts that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after His Death (5) on His Cross.

As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through His death, burial, and Resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, thus purchasing eternal life for all who believe in Him.

WHEN IS RESURRECTION SUNDAY?

In Western Christianity, Resurrection Sunday/Easter can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25 and is always celebrated on the Sunday immediately following the Paschal Full Moon. To verify the dates for upcoming years, please explore the table provided in the left sidebar.

IN THE BIBLE

The biblical account of Jesus' death on His Cross (Crucifixion), His Burial and His Resurrection (raising from the dead), is recorded in all four Gospels (7):

The word "Easter" does not appear in the Bible and no early church celebrations of Christ's Resurrection are mentioned in Scripture. Easter, like Christmas (8), is a tradition that developed later in church history.
